AN A/C RECHARGE IS NOT AN A/C REPAIR
Many people think that when the A/C system in their car stops blowing cold they just need a recharge. If your A/C system has lost some or all of its freon, it is because of a leak. Freon does not wear out or get used up. Does the freon in your refrigerator at home need to be replaced every year?
If your A/C system is not working properly there can be many reasons for the failure. Being low or out of freon is the most common cause of a motor vehicle A/C failure. Other reasons could be a functional problem in the freon circuit, an electrical problem, a control problem or a combination of these. Filling up an empty system with freon will usually get it working, but it will not fix the leak or any other problem.
Due to the skyrocketing cost of R-12 freon and the environmental damage that it causes, it is now more important than ever to locate and repair any leaks in your A/C system. Finding a leak in your A/C system may not be easy or cheap, but a certified A/C technician will have the equipment and. the experience to locate the leak or leaks and do a quality long lasting repair.
If a major repair, such as a compressor is needed to fix your A/C system, you may want to consider having your car retrofitted to use the "new" freon known as HFC-134a. The cost and availability of R-12 freon has now made retrofitting a good option when having major A/C repairs done.
